"Pokémon Black and White" (Japanese: ポケットモンスター ブラック・ホワイト, English: Pokémon Black and White) is a role-playing game developed by Game Freak and published by Nintendo and The Pokémon Company on the Nintendo DS platform. It belongs to the fifth generation of the Pokémon series [6]. It was released on September 18, 2010 in Japan, March 4, 2011 in Europe, March 6, 2011 in North America, and March 10, 2011 in Australia.

Game play

Similar to the previous games in the series, players in these two games play a young Pokémon trainer adventuring in the Unova region. Players must train Pokémon and battle other trainers, and stop the conspiracy of the villain organization Team Plasma. 156 new Pokémon were introduced in "Black" and "White", a number that surpassed the previous record in "Red/Green". In addition, there are new features such as a season system and three-on-three battles, and Pokémon will also be presented in a fully dynamic way. The two versions are independent of each other and have exactly the same plot. Although each version can be played independently, players must still connect with different versions to complete the game goal of collecting all Pokémon.

The game received a lot of praise upon its release. This includes improvements over previous games in the series, new Pokémon, and a unique and complex storyline. However, some critics felt that the game was not as innovative as expected. From a commercial perspective, the game is very successful. As of March 2015, "Black/White" has sold a total of 15.6 million units, becoming one of the best-selling Nintendo DS games, but not as good as its predecessor "Pokémon Diamond and Pearl". In June 2012, "Pokémon Black 2 and White 2", the sequel to "Pokémon Black and White", was released in Japan, and in October of the same year in North America, Europe and Australia.

The gameplay of Pokémon Black and White is largely the same as its predecessor. Similar to other handheld games in the Pokémon series, this game also uses a third-person bird's-eye view, with three main screens: map, battle screen, and directory menu. In the directory menu, players can adjust the arrangement of the team, check the items in the backpack, change game settings, and view the Pokédex or save files. At the beginning of the game, players will receive a Pokémon, and can later use Poké Balls to capture more Pokémon. Players can use their own Pokémon to battle other Pokémon. When the player randomly encounters a wild Pokémon or fights a non-player character (NPC) in the game, the screen will jump to a turn-based battle screen. Players only have one Pokémon at the beginning of the game and must capture more Pokémon through Poké Balls. Like other games in the series, players can only hold up to six Pokémon at the same time, and must use the in-game computer to store other Pokémon. These computers can be found in Pokémon Centers, which also provide services to heal Pokémon.

background

The story stage of "Pokémon Black and White" is the Unova region. Unlike Japan as the prototype background in the past, the Unova region is designed based on New York City in the United States. This was the idea that Masuda Junichi had when he chose the prototype city for "Diamond/Pearl". One example is Feiyun City, the region's central metropolis with a Brooklyn Bridge-like suspension bridge and numerous skyscrapers. Masuda also filled Feiyun City's streets with people and conveyed a "feel of community." The Unova area has a diverse landscape and its residents are ethnically and professionally diverse. The Japanese name for this area is "イッシュ", which means that although there are people and Pokémon from all over the place, they are all gathered in one place.

story

Like other works in the Pokémon main series, this game is a linear game, and the main plot occurs in a fixed order. The protagonist is a Pokémon trainer who becomes Pokémon Masters in the Unova region. Players will choose one of the Vine Snake, Warm Pig, and Water Otter given by Dr. Yew as their starter Pokémon, while the protagonist's two friends, Black Lian and Bai Lu, will choose the other two. The main goal of the player is to challenge the Pokémon Gym, the Four League Kings, and the Champions.

In addition, players must fight against the villain organization Team Plasma, who advocate that Pokémon are oppressed by humans and attempt to liberate Pokémon from humans. The leader of Team Plasma is N, who treats Pokémon as good friends rather than tools. During the game, N will come into contact with players many times. He says that he wants to capture a legendary dragon Pokémon in the Unova region and defeat the league champion. Then he wants to convince humans to change the way they get along with Pokémon, and then change the world. N will capture Zekrom in "Black" and Reshiram in "White".
