Nature

In the Pokémon games, nature is one of the important attributes that influence a Pokémon's growth. Each Pokémon has a specific nature, and these natures affect the increase or decrease of its stats, particularly Attack, Defense, Special Attack, Special Defense, and Speed. Nature not only influences battle performance but also affects a Pokémon's behavior, preferences, and dislikes.

A Pokémon's nature affects the following aspects:

  • Stats: A Pokémon's nature typically affects two of its stats, with one stat increasing by 10% and another decreasing by 10%. Additionally, there are five natures that do not affect any stats. Nature does not influence experience points or individual values. Besides the five neutral natures, the other 20 natures have unique combinations of increased and decreased stats. Starting from 'HeartGold/SoulSilver', the increased and decreased stats due to nature are marked in red and blue, respectively.
  • Taste: Nature also determines which flavors of berries or Pokéblocks a Pokémon likes or dislikes. The five natures that do not affect stats also do not affect taste preferences.
  • Contests: Nature affects not only stats but also a Pokémon's condition in Contests and Super Contests.
  • Behavior: In Battle Palace and Battle Tent, a Pokémon's nature determines its behavior. Different natures cause Pokémon to use different moves and change their strategies when their HP is low. The five natures that do not affect stats also exhibit different battle styles in the Battle Palace.
  • Pokétch: A Pokétch developer in Sunyshore City adds different applications to the player's Pokétch depending on the nature (Naive, Serious, or Hasty) of the Pokémon seen.
  • In Generation IV and earlier, a Pokémon's nature was determined by its personality value. In later generations, nature is determined by a hidden value. However, you can obtain a Pokémon with a specific nature in two ways:
    • Inheritance: Since 'Emerald', when a Ditto or female Pokémon holding an Everstone breeds, there is a 50% chance the offspring will inherit the nature, but this requires both Pokémon and trainer to be from the same language version of the game.
    • Synchronize Ability: Since 'Emerald', if a Pokémon with the Synchronize ability is in the first party slot, there is a 50% chance that the wild Pokémon encountered will have the same nature. Synchronize does not affect legendary Pokémon in 'Emerald', but it does affect all Pokémon in Generation IV games, except for those received from other trainers, such as Bebe's Eevee, revived fossil Pokémon, or Pokémon obtained from the Pokéwalker.
