Comatose causes the Pokémon to behave as if it were asleep, though it does not actually have the Sleep status condition. This prevents it from being affected by other major status conditions (such as poison, paralysis, burn, or freeze) while allowing it to use its regular moves.
Moves that specifically target sleeping Pokémon, like Dream Eater, can still affect a Pokémon with Comatose, and the ability-bearer can use moves like Sleep Talk and Snore. The power of Hex and Wake-Up Slap doubles when targeting a Pokémon with Comatose, though Wake-Up Slap does not cancel the Comatose effect.
Comatose cannot be removed or replaced by moves like Skill Swap or abilities like Mummy. Additionally, the move Purify and the Chesto Berry item have no effect on a Pokémon with Comatose.
